Former UK Prime Minister David Cameron Reveals Prostate Cancer Diagnosis

Former United Kingdom Prime Minister Lord David Cameron has publicly confirmed that he was recently diagnosed with localised prostate cancer at the age of 59 and underwent focal therapy as part of his treatment plan. His announcement, reported in The Times newspaper, has prompted renewed discussion about prostate health, early detection and the variety of management pathways used internationally, including those available in Australia.

A Personal Diagnosis That Sparked International Conversation

According to the Times, Lord Cameron sought medical review after his wife encouraged him to undergo routine checks following a radio interview. A prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test led to further assessment with MRI imaging and biopsy, which confirmed localised prostate cancer.

He proceeded with focal therapy, a procedure that applies energy to a targeted area of the prostate. Lord Cameron described the experience as “a big relief” and has since spoken publicly about the importance of regular health checks, particularly for individuals who may have increased risk factors. He also acknowledged that many men delay seeking medical advice, highlighting the importance of early conversations around prostate health.

Australia’s Role in Prostate Cancer Management and Research

Focal therapy has been available in Australia for several years through Urologists with relevant training and experience. Australian clinicians, including Prof Mark Frydenberg, Prof Nathan Lawrentschuk, Prof Phillip Stricker and A/Prof John Yaxley, have contributed to the development, research and clinical evaluation of Irreversible Electroporation, delivered using the NanoKnife System, for selected cases of localised prostate cancer.

This approach is offered only to patients who meet specific clinical criteria, following thorough assessment by the treating clinician. Focal therapy is not recommended in every case, as treatment decisions are informed by clinical factors, imaging findings, and guidance from the multidisciplinary care team.

Patients undergoing focal therapy typically take part in structured follow-up, which may include PSA testing and imaging, as directed by their clinician.

Why Cameron’s Announcement Matters

Lord Cameron’s discussion has brought renewed attention to several to several important considerations relevant to both community and clinical audiences.

Awareness and Early Detection
Prostate cancer is one of the most diagnosed cancers among Australian men, according to Cancer Australia.i Early assessment supports timely decision making and may broaden the range of management options that can be considered.

Individualised Treatment Pathways
Management of localised prostate cancer may include active surveillance, focal therapy, surgery or radiation. Suitability depends on a range of clinical factors and is determined in consultation with the treating urologist or specialist care team.

Continued Contribution from Australian Clinicians
Specialists across Australia continue to participate in research and clinical evaluation related to focal therapy and other prostate cancer management approaches, contributing to the broader evidence base.
